I love checking out hotels, I love street art and I love a cocktail (or two!) so I couldn’t have been happier when I received an invite to attend Malmaison London to celebrate Clerkenwell Design Week (23-25 May 2017); street artist Xenz was hosting a ’secret’ pop up studio party at the hotel.
I had no idea Clerkenwell was home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else, making it the number one design hub in the world. Clerkenwell Design Week has been running for eight years and this award winning event showcases leading UK and international brands and companies in a series of showroom events, exhibitions and special installations that take place across the area. Street artist Xenz was therefore in good company with all these creative folk. Xenz first entered the graffiti scene in the 1980s painting in derelict warehouses in Hull. After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art he spent ten years living in Bristol and in 2005 he moved to London where his studio is now. You might have even seen some of his work around the streets of Hackney. A few years ago Xenz was commissioned by Malmaison London to paint in the hotel. You can see his work in the main reception area and in the hallways on each floor but now you can see a piece of his work in every room of the hotel.
The party was held in one of the hotel rooms and at the party not only did I get to see Xenz’ work but I got to meet the man himself and what a lovely northern chap he is. He is so passionate about art and it was so interesting speaking to him about his inspiration and his focus on nature. Despite it being street art, his attention to detail and the delicateness of his work is incredible. He explained how he decided to bring the outdoors of Charterhouse Square into the hotel and you see these through the trees, the birds and the butterflies painted around the hotel. The party was complete with colour changing cocktails, delicious canapés served on artist palettes and a DJ in the shower! Yes, you read that right a DJ in the shower! This was a lovely evening and an honour to meet Xenz. I can’t wait to see some more of his work.
If would like to check out Xenz’ work you can visit Malmaison London for cocktails, dinning or an overnight stay. And if you’re interested Clerkenwell Design Week 2018 it is from 22nd to 24th May next year.
